ICVF — The Governing Body of Chess Variants
The International Chess Variant Federation (ICVF) exists to promote, standardize, and advance chess variants worldwide. Founded to bring structure and competitive integrity to the diverse landscape of chess variants—from topological boards to novel mechanics—the ICVF serves as the governing body for all sanctioned variant chess competitions.
We believe that exploring chess beyond the standard 8×8 board unlocks new frontiers of strategic thinking—whether through three-dimensional play, non-Euclidean topologies, or inventive rule modifications that challenge players to master entirely new tactical motifs.
Chess variants modify the rules, board geometry, or piece set of standard chess to create new strategic challenges. The ICVF recognizes variants across several categories: topological variants (torus, cylinder, Klein bottle), 3D variants (Raumschach), mechanical variants (Alice Chess, Crazyhouse), and information variants (Fog of War, Kriegspiel).
The flagship variant, Raumschach (“space chess”), was invented by Dr. Ferdinand Maack in Hamburg, Germany in 1907. Played on a 5×5×5 board, it extends classical chess into the third dimension with the unique Unicorn piece. Unlike novelty variants, Raumschach has over a century of recorded play, published theory, and competitive history.

Maack publishes the first formal rules and algebraic notation system for Raumschach, enabling recorded games and correspondence play.
