IF3DC — The Governing Body of Three-Dimensional Chess
The International Federation of 3D Chess (IF3DC) exists to promote, standardize, and advance the game of three-dimensional chess worldwide. Founded to bring structure and competitive integrity to Raumschach and its variants, the IF3DC serves as the governing body for all sanctioned 3D chess competitions.
We believe that extending chess into three dimensions unlocks a new frontier of strategic thinking—one that challenges players to reason spatially, plan across vertical and horizontal planes simultaneously, and master entirely new tactical motifs.
Three-dimensional chess, or Raumschach (“space chess”), was invented by Dr. Ferdinand Maack in Hamburg, Germany in 1907. Played on a 5×5×5 board comprising five stacked levels, it extends classical chess into the third dimension, introducing new strategic possibilities and the unique Unicorn piece—which moves along triagonal lines through all three axes simultaneously.
Unlike novelty multi-level chess variants, Raumschach is a deeply studied game with over a century of recorded play, published theory, and competitive history.
Dr. Ferdinand Maack invents Raumschach in Hamburg, Germany, creating the first rigorous three-dimensional chess variant.
Maack publishes the first formal rules and algebraic notation system for Raumschach, enabling recorded games and correspondence play.
Raumschach gains a following among chess clubs in Germany and Central Europe, with organized matches and published analysis.
Fae Chess launches as the first modern online platform for Raumschach, bringing 3D chess to the internet era with ELO ratings and multiplayer support.
The International Federation of 3D Chess (IF3DC) is established to govern competitive play, standardize rules, and grow the global community.
